Searching for the perfect language (1997)
94 c-prints, each mounted on wooden boxes,
each 32,5x25x6 cm, edition of 5.

Within this piece I used the basic elements of language – a choice of alphabetical characters called Plain ASCII Code. The work is made up of the 94 graphic characters of the Plain ASCII Code, which I first created as three-dimensional objects made of clay. I then photographed each one, holding it in my hand. Afterwards I recycled the clay to form new letters.
Interesting similarities exist between “clay” and an “alphabet”. Both can be used as raw material for the creation of ideas and the transportation of meaning. Both offer endless resources and can be used over and over again.
